Zechstein Trail

The Zechstein Trail, which is currently under construction, connects two unique fossil sites: Korbacher Spalte and Rodenbach Quarry. Both are among the most important Zechstein outcrops in Europe. Fossil plant finds in Rodenbach and Permian reptiles in Korbach provide an accurate picture of the animal and plant world and living conditions 250 million years ago. This makes it possible to reconstruct the appearance of the landscape in this time.

Come with us on the Zechstein Trail! Along the coast of the Zechstein Sea you will walk over the former seabed. Find bygone beaches and ancient reefs. Learn how people have mined and used copper-bearing deposits of Zechstein since ancient times. Learn how limestone rocks underground shape an entire landscape - including geologically interesting karst features and ecologically valuable semi-arid grasslands with rare plants and animals. Everyone can experience the history of the earth on the Zechstein Trail!

The Zechstein Trail is divided into a main route of approx. 30 km and six shorter circular routes. These are each about 10-15 km long and are ideal for a day trip on foot or by bike.

Further sections of the Zechstein Trail are currently being planned and established. Take a look again, it's worth it!

The first day tour, the "GeoPfad Korbach", connects the Korbach crevice with the gold nature trail and visitor mine on the Eisenberg near Goldhausen. The trail was opened in June 2008 and has got its own web pages.
