Geotopes are earth-historical formations of inanimate nature that provide insights into the development of the earth or life. They include outcrops of rocks, soils, minerals and fossils as well as individual natural creatures and natural parts of the landscape. Geotopes are worthy of preservation if they are characterized by their special geological significance, rarity, uniqueness or beauty. They are documents of special value for science, research and teaching as well as for nature and local history. In case of a possible endangerment, they should receive legal protection (as a ground monument or natural monument).
The award as "Geotope of the Year" is made by the project office of the National Geopark GrenzWelten. Proposals can be submitted by individual citizens, citizens' groups and associations in the first quarter of each year. In this case, a brief description of the object as well as a justification of the proposal must be submitted. The project office checks the suitability of the proposal. The selected geotopes are announced in the local press and on the homepage. The call is made at the beginning of each year, also via the press and the homepage.
