Rock landscape in the „Werbetal“

The Werbe is a small tributary of the Eder, which enters Lake Edersee in Nieder-Werbe. North of the lake, it flows through a wild and romantic meadow valley lined with impressive limestone cliffs. These consist of sediments from the Zechstein sea that surged onto the northern slopes of the Kellerwald some 290 million years ago. In the last millions of years, especially during the ice ages of the Pleistocene, the Werbe has cut deeply into these cliffs and shaped steep rocks.

On the steep edge of the valley slope near Ober-Werbe stand the ruins of an 11th century monastery - surrounded by limestone semi-arid grasslands and orchid-beech forests of the "Langenstein" nature reserve. Columnar juniper bushes testify to a former grazing activity on the shallow steep slopes, which today are no longer profitable to farm.

The monastery ruins on the imposing rocks can also be marveled at from following the beautiful circular trail, the Klosterpfädchen! Just follow the blue symbol (photo) from the center of the village. Once you have reached the top, you can make a small "detour" to the long stone. But be careful! Here you should be free from giddiness.
