Elsebach-Path

The Kellerwald is known for its extensive beech forests with many near-natural streams. The Elsebach valley is a good example of this. The ecological nature trail starting here would like to introduce you to the ecology of the beech forest and its habitats.

Hollow paths, gnarled hute trees and heather remains along the way are reminders of old times of the cultural use of the Kellerwald. Learn with your children about the eternal cycle of the forest's growth and decay. It is worth making a detour to the lookout point at the Hagenstein north of the village of Schmittlotheim: here you will find impressive boulder heaps on the steep rocky slopes of the "Loreley of the Eder Valley", which were formed by frost weathering during the last Ice Age.

Tip

Starting point for your tour on the Elsebach Trail is the National Park Hiking Park "Elsebach" near Schmittlotheim (info box with flyers). The total length of the trail is about 5.5 km, for which you should take at least 3 hours. A flyer of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park offers hands-on opportunities for young and old!
