The mountain lake at the Meisterstein

Between Winterberg-Silbach and Winterberg-Siedlinghausen lies the mountain lake - surrounded by steep rock faces, this geotope dates back to the time of open-cast mining around 1930.

This impressive geotope was created by mining of diabase, a volcanic rock that was brought to the earth's surface here about 300 million years ago. The diabase protruded from the summit of the Meisterstein and was quarried in 1930 and used for the construction of roads and railroad lines in the Hochsauerlandkreis.

What remained was this huge hollow, which filled with groundwater and rainwater.

If you want to visit the mountain lake, you should be free from giddiness and careful, because not all areas on the steep walls are secured. From the center of Silbach, follow the gallery path to the top of the Meisterstein and you can look down into the turquoise-blue lake from the top!

The mountain lake tour starts in Winterberg and leads on a total of 24km past the mountain lake and other natural attractions of the Sauerland!
