The slate mine in Willingen

The slate mine "Grube Christine" offers an insight into a cantilever chamber mining from the 20th century.

Claystones that formed at the bottom of a sea were folded and slated during a mountain formation about 290 million years ago, when the Rhenish Slate Mountains were formed. In Willingen, such slates have been mined for about 150 years. The slate mine "Grube Christine" offers an insight into a cantilevered chamber mining from the 20th century. The steeply standing slate was mined and processed into roof slates. This naturally formed building material still characterizes the townscape in Willingen and large parts of the Sauerland region.

The slate mine "Grube Christine" is located near the center of Willingen and is well signposted.
