The Burgberg tunnel in Battenberg

Due to increasing demand for manganese as a result of industrialization, mining of manganese dioxide began in the 19th century near Battenberg and Laisa in the Ederbergland Geopark region. However, after a few ups and many downs, activities were stopped again in 1921. But the traces of mining are still visible today.

In Battenberg, mining of manganese ore, also called "brownstone", was carried out until the 18th century. The ore was formed around 290 million years ago during the folding of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. In the "Burgbergstollen" visitor mine, visitors can experience mining up close in a gallery that has only been fortified with a few extensions and has been preserved in its original state.

Experience mining in an adit fortified with only a few extensions and preserved in its original state. The gallery can be reached on foot in a few minutes from the Battenberg market square. The way is well signposted.
