Nature and geotope conservation

Geotopes and geotope conservation as a partial task of nature conservation

Geotopes are earth-historical formations of inanimate nature that provide knowledge about the development of the earth and life. They include both natural creations and artificially created outcrops of rocks, soils, minerals and fossils, as well as individual natural creations and natural landscape features (e.g. rock formations). Thus, in simple terms, geotopes are important "showcases" and "archives" of nature shaped by the history of the earth.

Geotopes are classified as worthy of protection if they are characterized by their special geological significance, rarity, uniqueness or beauty. They are documents for science, research and teaching as well as for nature and local history and require legal protection as a partial task of nature conservation.
