The Wetzstein in Neuastenberg

The Wetzstein (whetstone) in Winterberg-Neuastenberg is a quarry of quartzitic sandstones and clay shales from the lower Middle Devonian, protected as a natural monument. The special feature is the rock folding with saddle and trough structure.

The rocks of the Wetzstein consisting of sandstones and mudstones have an age of about 390 million years and can be assigned to the Lower Middle Devonian. The formation of the Rhenish Slate Mountains and tectonic activity formed folds in the form of saddles and hollows, which are exposed here in the quarry and allow insights into the Paleozoic.

The quarry is very accessible and is located only a few hundred meters from a parking lot with a shelter on the road from Winterberg towards Neuastenberg (Lenneplätze junction). A hiking trail also goes along here...
