Gewerkenweg Brilon - Olsberg

The Brilon - Olsberg region has been characterized by the mining and processing of mineral resources for many centuries. Archaeological findings prove their use already since Roman times. In varying intensity, mainly lead, calamine and iron were mined and processed.

In the past, the name "Gewerken" was used to describe entrepreneurs who combined mining, charcoal burning, smelting and processing of pig iron in their hands. For larger and more expensive projects, e.g. the construction of a new gallery, several tradesmen often joined forces. The Eisenberg, located between Olsberg and Brilon, was also developed by several tradesmen from these two towns.

The Gewerkenweg connects 21 geostations where information about the various mining activities, the cooperation of the Gewerken and impressions of a long mining history are conveyed. Hike along ancient transport routes, discover mining traces and immerse yourself in the underground world of the miners during a tour of the tunnels.

The main trail (marked red) leads along a length of 11 km past 14 stations. The starting or finishing point in Brilon is the Haus Hövener museum, in Olsberg the Haus Bathen.
The "Alte Hütte Schleife" (marked blue) also starts at Museum Haus Hövener. This trail passes seven more stations and meets the main trail after about 10 km at the Hilbringse customs station. If required, guided tours can be booked on the Gewerkenweg and in the Philippstollen.
