The geological garden in Giershagen

Here, stones "tell" their stories - in the geological garden in Giershagen, visitors can experience the regional rocks and their history of formation up close during a walk through the history of the earth.
The pavilion offers a lot of additional information about the history of the earth and mining!

As part of a LEADER project, the geological garden was opened by the municipality of Giershagen in October 2021!

In addition to a large pavilion, which invites you to rest and houses many information signs, interested people, tourists and locals can look forward to a journey through the history of the earth.

The ground plan of the Geological Garden is the mapping of the Giershagen district. The various rock formations are shown in different colors in their geographical position. The rock specimens were then mounted at the place where they were found. The name of the rock type is written on plaques, and everything worth knowing about the geology of Giershagen can be read on information boards and is illustrated by diagrams.

"The stones tell their story - but you need an interpreter to read and explain it! Giershagen has an unusually high density of different types of rocks," explains local curator Reinhard Schandelle.

The idea originated from him and the implementation was also largely in his hands!

The geological garden is located directly at the old Reinhard mine. A parking lot is available. Those arriving by car can follow the sign in the direction of the Bionik Path. Cyclists can reach the geological garden via the „Diemelradweg“.
